Io atmospheric extinction predictions for 2009 Jovian Mutual Events

The following times are best estimates for observing the extinction caused by Io’s atmosphere as it occults another Jovian moon. They are best estimates and may have errors in time up to 10 minutes due to the non-uniform atmosphere and random jets of material. The key here is long wings outside the predicted times to succeed in capturing this subtle event in its entirety. The drop from extinction may be a tenth of a magnitude or less. Also, once the Mutual Event season is over, there will still be plenty of opportunities to capture this event as Jupiter’s moons pass behind Io’s atmosphere without being occulted by Io’s body. These events would offer prime spectral analysis opportunities. If you succeed in acquiring data for any of these events please notify Scott Degenhardt at the email above.

The following table is for events where a moon passes near enough to Io that atmospheric extinction may be possibly measured.  Any event with a MinD of about 3” or less is a high probability of detecting the dip in the lightcurve due to atmospheric extinction of the moon behind Io.
